How long must you have a car before you change the brake pads?

I purchased my car brand new about a year and a half ago so I doubt it needs new brake pads now but how long before they'll need changing? How long must you have a car before you change the brake pads?It isn't about time but about mileage and the conditions that you drive. Like stop and go driving will wear the brakes faster than a lot of freeway driving. Normally, about 40K miles or a little sooner is an average figure. good luck. How long must you have a car before you change the brake pads?it's not how long you have the car it's how much you drive it normal ware on brakes you can go for 10.000 or more miles but hard stopping riding the brakes can shorten the life of your brakes simple solution is to have them checked by a professionalHow long must you have a car before you change the brake pads?Well, it depends upon mileage and the style of driving - and a little bit upon the car type of course (quality of the brakes %26amp; pads). Anything between 10.000 miles (very sporty driving) to 30.000 miles is possible. How long must you have a car before you change the brake pads?It depends on if someone brakes a lot or not...We have had our vehicle for almost two and half years and were told the brakes passed inspection but keep and eye on the wear down...They are going to need changed soon...Also depends on how many drivers per vehicle; stop and go traffic; hard accelerations and stoppingsHow long must you have a car before you change the brake pads?Probably not now, what's happening that you think the brake pads need to be changed? See if you are covered under warranty! The warranty should cover this. If not, the dealership is shady. Brake pads take anywhere from 3 to 7 years to wear, depending on the amount of driving and stop and go traffic you are dealing with. How long must you have a car before you change the brake pads? It's not a function of time. It depends on the mileage and your personal driving habits. The only way to know is to pull the wheels and inspect them. How long must you have a car before you change the brake pads?depends on your driving habits. my aunt and grandmother have the exact typeof van and my aunt has changed her brakes about 3 times since 2000 while my grandmother has had to change them once( i did it fyi). dont worry though, when its time to change them they'll let u know. all modern brake systems have sensors that start to screech when they are worn.

How to change brake pads on motorcycle Kawasaki Ninja 500R?Your best bet would be to get a service manual if you plan on doing any of your own maintenance on your bike. If you aren't going to do it right, don't do it at all.

I got a Clymer manual for my bike. It was the best $25 investment I made on my bike.

A Clymer manual for this bike is only about $23 + shipping. This manual will pay for itself the first time you use it.

This is much better than asking strangers on the Internet how to do something. How could you know if what they tell you is correct?

A good maintenance manual will have step by step procedures on how to correctly do this task. This way, you can get the job done right. And yes, the manual will have pictures.

With this service manual, you will no longer need to rely on strangers on the Internet to tell you how to properly take care of your bike.

How do you change the brake pads on a 2004 chevy silverado?

ive never done anything with the brakes. i know very minimal stuff about mechanical but i want to learn and i need new pads. i basically know how to rotate tires and change the oil and have minor knowledge of parts. Will i be able to do it or am i better off taking it in? i not only want to save money, but to learn more about working on trucks. thanksHow do you change the brake pads on a 2004 chevy silverado?I would buy a service manual and rock and roll!!!

The fun you'll have with Silverados includes, slide pins %26quot;frozen%26quot; in the brackets. (Aftermarket parts stores are carrying the brackets now, if its stuck, forget the heat go right to the bracket, not very much and will save you a ton of fustration.) I have an 03 that I love but I've seen the same problems with all Chevy trucks especially the rears!

Bank on replacing rotors in the rear pretty much every brake job if its still disc, they went back to drum brakes for 04 which I think are better for a truck especially when pulling my 4,000 lb boat!

I was curious if any one had and tips or tricks. its an 89 c1500 silverado. What tools besides my floor jack do i need to change brake pads and rotors?I own the same year, a 1500 series. Correct with the C-clamp but something you need to know is open the bleeder valve to compress the caliber. Forcing the fluid back through the master cyclinder will damage it. It's fairly easy to do.

You should also pull the rotors and have them mikedWhat tools besides my floor jack do i need to change brake pads and rotors?Have a wheel chalk handy for the rear tires %26amp; perhaps a set of jack stands.

A basic wrench assortment %26amp; a %26quot;C%26quot; clamp to compress the caliper pistons back. You might want some break lube or anti-seize and stop squeak for the pad to piston caliper area.

If your new shoes didn't come with hardware make sure the old stuff is in good condition. What tools besides my floor jack do i need to change brake pads and rotors?10mm and-or 7/16%26quot; wrench

How do I change the front brake pads on a KF Ford Laser?

I want to know if there is anything to be careful of before my partner changes the brake pads on our car.How do I change the front brake pads on a KF Ford Laser?Well first off don't use just a jack also use jack stands ive seen many people

just jack up a car with a floor jack then get under it and get crushed and or killed

seen them both make sure your partner uses jack stands which are pretty cheap

compared to your life, as for the brakes themselves simple to replace first off

you will need to open master cylinder if the fluid is low don't fill it generally low fluid means worn brakes unbolt calipers which is the housing that holds the pads in the housing is a piston with a rubber gasket you will be to get a piston

compressor tool or large pair of channel locks and compress the piston all the way back in other wise your going to be hard pressed to get new pads in as you compress the piston the fluid level should rise back to full mark brakes are a sealed system if there was a leak brakes won't work well brake pedal will just slowly hit the floor boards when compressing pistons use rags

on the channel locks teeth so you don't poke a hole in the gaskets around the pistons put the new pads in re bolt caliper do the same on the other side

when your doing the brakes you want to look at the rotor make sure its smooth also you can look at the old pads them selves if one pad is more worn

the the other the calipers may need replacing make sure you buy a can of brake cleaner that way you can wipe any grease off the rotors grease and brakes don't mix nor will you stop, also if your rotors have lots of grooves

they will need to be replaced its not totally critical but brakes will last half the time than normally, also check fluid level once both brakes are replaced top off if needed its not totally critical to replace worn calipers or rotors but the new pad won't last long if you don't as far as brakes its always best to replace worn out calipers ie uneven wear or bad rotors with lots of grooves

you can take your rotors in to be turned meaning that a shop or machine shop puts on a lath and cuts the grooves out the problem with this is heating and cooling also any hair line cracks replace the rotors they will fail you looking for discoloration etc make sure you use cleaner specific to brakes

otherwise it will leave a chemical film and you may not stop and also wear eye protection

    hope this helps

How long do i have left to change my brake pads?

im stuck in new york right now, and need to get to ohio. my brakes make a horrible grinding sound when i brake, but its only been doing it about 5 days. i bought brake pads for 20 bucks, but it would take 60 to change them, which i just cant afford. i need all of my money for gas. i need to get down to kentucky which is 700 miles away. i wont be making to much stops though, not anymore than i would in town. would i be okay if i just went ahead and left? i have people that can do it for free once i get there. How long do i have left to change my brake pads?If you drive any further you will need to replace the rotors as well as the pads. A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE.How long do i have left to change my brake pads?If they are grinding then they are pretty bad. But if you have no money then I would drive slow and instead of using your brakes try slowing down by downshifting and then use the brakes as little as possible. Good luck!.How long do i have left to change my brake pads? No! you shouldn't drive it. It's too risky and someone or yourself can get hurt. By now your rotors are probably messed up. You should have someone %26quot;western union%26quot; you some money and then have it fixed. Let them know that you get paid tomorrow and you can pay them back with additional amount for their troubles helping you. If your rotors aren't messed up that bad yet. Then go drive by a garage and let them know your situation and see if they can assist you with replacing the brake pads while you do most of the work. It's not that hard (socket wrench, two bolts, clamp, brake quiet and pads,) but then again if your not familiar with cars or mechanically inclined then don't do it! Brakes should be done by a professional. Other than that the only other option is to see if you can leave it their over night someplace and find another means of transportation home with the money you have left (bus, taxi). Come back the next day with your funds and take it to a garage. Best of Luck! How long do i have left to change my brake pads?Yeah you should be ok if you use the gearbox to slow down and hardly touch the brakes.

If the disks are scored you can grind them by jacking up and running the engine but if they're not too bad new pads will quickly bed in

Your breaks are borderline and wearing out the disk but will get you one more journey dudeHow long do i have left to change my brake pads?OK, look at the maps again, try to plan your route on as many highways as possible, soft even braking were possible and you should be fine.

Good Luck! How long do i have left to change my brake pads?absolutely, go ahead and take off to Kentucky. Just remember when you have to get off the highway or slow down for a construction zone, or someone cuts off your lane in traffic, and you go to use the brakes, and the vehicle pulls hard (like pulls you into the ditch), or the pedal goes straight to the floor and you can't stop,.or you rear-end someone and hurt them or yourself, or you kill a construction worker--hey that's ok as long as your insurance for your vehicle is paid in full and you have enough coverage to not get sued to the gills and end up owing $20 million on a lawsuit---sure lets's get to kentucky. the small amount of money you spend(and mean that is cheap) to get this accomplished will be long, long forgotten if any of these or other mishaps should happen to you--think--don't chance your life or someone elsesHow long do i have left to change my brake pads?get a towtruck and have it towed to this guy. Chances are, if you try to take the highway with those brakes, someone's gonna get hurt or killed. If you have AAA plus you can ghave it towed for free. How long do i have left to change my brake pads? The factor here is not money its safety you should not drive this car knowing there is a brake defect as the owner of the vehicle you are legally responsible for the maintenance of the car. The car should be serviced at regular intervals which includes checking the brakes, the law will come down on you very hard in the case of the vehicle being involved in an accident and if there should be any fatality you will be looking at a jail term so a driver you must be responsible this is a loaded gun and can kill you or other innocent people you want that on your conscious.

Sounds like the rotors or brake discs as they are called in UK are already damaged which need not of happened if you had just fitted the new brake pads in time ! The car now has a serious brake deficiency and should NOT BE DRIVEN

Stay safe good luckHow long do i have left to change my brake pads?i wouldn't drive on those break...same thing happened to me and it cost me $800.00 to get my break back to normal because I waited too long..sorry =(

Brake pads change, do you always have to bleed the brake fluid?

When you change brake pads and put the piston back with a C-clamp, and finish up the brake pad change, do you ALWAYS have to bleed the brake fluid? if so, do you have to do it just in the line you worked on, or you have to it in all 4 tires?

    Thanks

Civic 99, EX, 86 KMilesBrake pads change, do you always have to bleed the brake fluid?no u almost never have to bleed the brakes when changing the pads.....only time ud have to bleed it is if u disconnected the caliper for some reason......just don't forget to put a rag around the master cylinder to catch any extra fluid when u push in the piston.....and make sure its full when ur done...good luckBrake pads change, do you always have to bleed the brake fluid? No , i take a rubber line put on the bleeder and run it to a bottle of fluid . As long as the end of the rubber line is under the fluid level. you can loosen the bleeder so you can push back the pistons in the calipers with out drawing any air into the system... it is also a good way to bleed the system of any air that has got into the system.Brake pads change, do you always have to bleed the brake fluid?nope only if you loosen a brake line or bleeder

is this a simple job? what tools do i need? is there an online diagram, or video that i can see, please help Thanks! How do you change brake pads and rotors for a 1996 dodge grand caravan?Take the cap off the master cylinder (where you put the brake fluid in). Remove the wheels. Remove the 2 bolts holding the calipers on, and slide the calipers off of the rotors. Do not let them hang by the hoses. Tie them to something with some bailing wire, etc. Remove the two bolts that hold the caliper mounting brackets to the hub assembly. The rotors shold pull right off. If not, beat 'em with a hammer like you mean it until they pop off. Installation is the reverse of removal except you're gonna need a decent sized C-clamp to push the pistons on the calipers back in. Do this nice and easy and real slow. The reason you took the cap off the master cylinder is to allow the fluid to back up when you compress the caliper pistons.

Tools-wise: basic hand tools, and you might need to find a torx bit for the caliper bolts. C-clamp

Your best bet ist to go get a Haynes manual for it when you by the parts. It has complete intructions and pictures.

    Capilers can be cleaned.

I do not have any information on an A class, I do know that Mercedes have been using an Active Braking system I do not know if your car has this, should your car have this active brake system you will have no choice but to go to Mercedes.

And I am not refering to ABS, that is different. With an active system you need to hook up a scan tool to tell the cars' computer to release the capilers so that you can change the brakes. If you force the caliper piston back you may damage the braking system. Please can someone tell me how to change brake pads on a mercedes A class.?huh, take it to a mechanic. If you are asking that here you mustn't know what you are doing and you really need to know what your doing to change brake pads. It isn't simple. But if it's a squeel when the wheel is going around when you drive, just go down a street at night and slam on the brakes (maybe a couple of times) that should fix the problem.

If you could please tell me step by step on what to do i would be very thankful. (and if possible you can give me links or show me pictures)

thanks. How do you change brake pads on a 1996 chevy s10 pickup truck? When you are changing disc brakes, you have to take off two or so bolts that hold the calipers on. There is two tricks you need to remember, one is when you pull that caliper off it will still have a brake line connected to it, don't let it hang by the brake line, use a zip tie or a piece of metal wire to suspend it while you work on it.

Also before you remove the old pads, you have to spread the brake pads apart by compressing the brake piston. If you don't do this before you slip the new pads in, the new pads will be thicker and mean that you won't be able to slip them around the rotor when you try to reassemble. Use anything you can to spread the brake pads such as a pair of beefy pliers that you stick between the pads while they are closed and pull the handles apart to spread the pads, they make a tool to do it nice and proper, but you don't have to have it.

You are also going to have a line on the rear brakes that is for the parking brake if you are wondering about that. Swapping the brake pads is pretty simple, there is just pads and sometimes little brackets to help guide the pads. Also look at the rotor and check to see how thick it is, if there is a lot of wear and the metal is getting thin you will have to replace it.How do you change brake pads on a 1996 chevy s10 pickup truck?1. How to change the brake pads on a 1988 volvo 740 turbo?

Has anyone who is a do it your selfer tried to change the brake pads on their Volvo 740 DL turbo sedan? I think I can do it but looking for tips and checks and dos and don'ts.How to change the brake pads on a 1988 volvo 740 turbo?i worked on Volvos for 5 years going through college. the brakes are some of the easiest in the industry to change. very straight forward, no special tools required. you may need an extra large screwdriver or even a small crowbar to gently push (or squeeze) the caliper pistons back into the calipers so that the new (fatter) brake pads will fit. if i remember correctly, there are two pistons and pushing on one will sometimes push the other one out, so try pushing both at the same time or going back and forth from one to the other so they go back into the caliper evenly. if one gets pushed all the way out, then you are left with a mess of brake fluid on floor and the need to bleed the brakes after your done, which you can avoid. lastly, Volvo used two different kinds of brake assemblies. one made by Girling and the other name eludes me, but they are distinctly different and not interchangeable. i could tell them apart simply by sight, but you will probably want to bring in the old pad to the parts store to match them up with the new ones as there is NO WAY to tell which ones your car has without physically looking at them.

Does anyone have a link to a website explaining how to change the brake pads on a honda civic type r or would they be able to explain it?How do i change the front brake pads on a honda civic type r?Some people have great confidence in garages!

After a major service my car did 4 (FOUR) miles before a grinding noise occur ed due to there being NO LINING on the rear brakes. Another time they adjusted the rear brake clearance by tightening the handbrake cable. When loaded this pulled the brakes on - gently - and heated up the drums to the point where the grease in the bearing ran out into the drum ad ruined the race and the linings - no rear brakes!

Most main dealer garages rely on company car repairs and many of them cannot even blow up the tyres to the correct - or even the same - pressures. Believe me I have checked.

And so on and so on.

If you must use a garage go to a local - one man - one. He relies on doing a good job or his name gets round and he goes out of business.

Get a Haynes manual and have confidence.

How would I change the brake pads in my honda accord?

I need to change my 2 front brake pads...my friend did it a few years ago and I watched him but don't remember much of it....but I think I can change them myself I just need to know what to do...

I know you need to raise your car and take off the wheel...from there it's pretty straightforward I'm assuming.

I have socket wrenches is that all I need? How would I change the brake pads in my honda accord? If you plan on doing work on your car yourself, be smart about it. Get a manual for your car. Chilton's are the best, you can usually get the right one at your auto store, and it will come in handy for all the little things down the road that will eventually go bad. Dude you have to make sure things are right...those are your brakes...spring for the book ..they run about 16.00 dollars.

How often do i have to change the brake pads for 2008 highlander?

I am thinking about purchasing the 2008 Toyota Highlander 2wd with 30500 miles on it.

I am wondering how soon i should expect to change the brake pads. Also tires etc..

it is the private party purchase with 60000 miles factory warranty. How often do i have to change the brake pads for 2008 highlander?40,000 miles is average. But I've seen vehicles go as long at 70, depending on the driver. Tires, if they've been rotated on schedule should last about 50,000. Expect to do a brake job within the next year. How often do i have to change the brake pads for 2008 highlander?I believe this vehicle has similar brakes to the tacomma 4 runner and they were a bit fast on wear 30,000 miles would be good. alignment and ballance are criticle to long tire wear as is correct tire preasure. the car may have a different air preasure recomendation in the manual than does the tire as different manufacturers set different recomendations. go by the tire! if it says 40 max cold this means in the morning before driving this tire should be no higher than 40 lbs preasure. this is a max number expecting as heavy a load to be on the tires as they are designed to hold up. most cars and trucks are fine with 3 to 5 lbs less under normal conditions.

Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?

I have a 2006 Civic. The front drivers side tire seems to be emitting a scraping sound. It goes away when I come to a stop, it doesn't get worse or anything. It does it about once everytime I drive, then I hit the brakes and it goes away.

Do I need to change my brake pads?Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?The brakes have a wear indicator that makes a scraping sound when the brakes are due to be replaced.

If you don't replace them, the pads wear down to the metal and start to wear on the rotor making a scraping sound. Most likely it needs brake work.

If you jack the car to check it, you will need put blocks under it. I know people that have died when cars fell on the while on a jack. Do not get under a car on a jack!!!! Get help if you don't know what you are doing.

You should get someone familiar with brakes to look at it. I know too many women that have taken cars to a mechanic and been cheated because the mechanic expects they don't know about cars. It is better to know before you get to the mechanic what you need. I have even seen them show parts that don't belong to the car, telling them it needs to be replaced. Take an experienced person with you. Don't blindly trust the mechanic. Unfortunately there are some crooks out there and it can easily cost you $1000 or more. Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?maybe, jack up the car and take a look. spin the tire by hand and see what is scrapping.Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?pass time to change just pads when you hear it scraping yes but now you have to have rotors turn or replace,,more you drive it the more it cost to fix.. drive it to a shop and have it checkDo I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?It definitely sounds like the brakes if it is making a scraping sound. And it sounds like scraping, your brakes may be really bad and the pads are actually scraping the roders.

Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?yes change the brake pads. the sraping/squeling your hearing is a small warning bar on the brake pad tht pretty much says change me the pads almost gone.

and change it asap because the more it scrapes the worse the rotors get Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?Sounds like a sticking Caliper. This means when you are not braking the pads are still lightly touching the Disk. The usual sulution is to clean the brakes or consider getting them serviced. On such a new car its probabaly best to get a main dealer to check them.Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?It could just be rust on your brake pads or your rotors. It happens if you don't drive your car much and you live someplace with any amount of humidity. Rust on the pads or rotors will cause your brakes to make noise the first time (or couple of times) you use them when you get in your car and go somewhere.

To be on the safe side, however, you should have someone you trust check it. Don't go to a brake shop because they'll tell you that you need new brakes. Ask someone you know that knows about cars to take a look at it, or if you have an honest mechanic, take it to him/her. That way you'll know for sure if you need a brake job.Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?when brakes get close to needing replaced they have a piece of metal that squeals a little to warn you that brakes need replaced it is a safety feature so that you still have some brake pad left and can get them fixed before you damage the rotor Do I need to change my brake pads or whats going on?if it,s just on 1 side, it might be a caliper hanging up. better get it looked after. you probably could tell by removing the wheel.

loosen and remove two bolts from brake caliper (varies by car)

remove brake caliper from top (a prying tool may be needed but should ultimately roll towards rear of car from the top.

remove old pads and put on new, you may need to compress the piston depending on wear (to do that remove lid from master cylinder and force piston to fully disengage, taking care not to damage it, a c-clamp and a peice of metal works great)

When do you know you need to change your brake pads?

I have a 97 Honda Civic EX coupe.

Should I go by certain mileage as in every 50K miles or whatever? Or should I physically go look at the pads? If so, how thin is too thin? But I remember couple times the mechanic took the pads out it still look pretty thick to me (~.25%26quot; if I remembered right) it definitely had some to go until it hits the base material. So how do I tell when I should change my brake pads?

Also, if i do change anyone of them I should change all 4 right?

Thanks! When do you know you need to change your brake pads? You can't go by mileage because every driver is different and many people have more stop and go driving which wears the pads faster.

Best way is to look at pads during tire rotation. With the wheels off the pads can be easily checked for uneven wear to determine if they need replacing. That is how I caught an early problem and prevented damage to a rotor. One side had worn much faster than the other due to a slight flaw in the pad.

Some pads have a device that make a high pitched squeal when they are getting close to needing replacement. If you wait till you hear metal grinding on metal you have waited too long and will most likely need to replace the rotors as well. Big expense!!

If you don't rotate your own tires every 6000 miles ask the shop people who do it for you to check it at tire rotation. That will give you piece of mind and save you a lot of money.

Usually the front will wear out first so you need only change BOTH front ones at the same time.

Always change the pads on left and right of the same axle, front or rear. ON a car I drove for 180,000 miles I changed the front pads almost twice as many times as the rear....When do you know you need to change your brake pads? When you hear 'em squeakin' you should clean them and if they keep doin' it you should start thinking about knew brakes. When do you know you need to change your brake pads? No. 1, when your mechanic services your vehicle, they should check your brakes. No. 2, if they are worn out they usually start to squeak (they put metal in for this purpose)When do you know you need to change your brake pads?WHEN YOU START TO HEAR A NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE A SCRAPEING SOUND WHEN YOU APPLY THE BREAKS AND IT IS EASY TO CHECK THE BREAKS REMOVE THE WHEELE AND LOOK UNDER THE ROTOR ARE PRIE THE BREAK PAD AWAY FROM THE ROTOR AND YOU CAN SEE IF THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED OR IF YOU DONT WANT TO MESS WITH IT TAKE IT TO A PEPBOYS SHOP AND THEY WILL CHECK IT FOR YOU FOR FREE THEY OFFER A FREE BREAK INSPECTION AND SO DO SOME OF THE OTHER SHOPS TOO OK HOPE THIS HELPS.......When do you know you need to change your brake pads?Just look at your whole car...

Look at the brake pads, or if you hear them squeek then check them out. WHen you get the time. The car WILL stop even if it's bare metal. Been there done that. Drove*%26gt;? an 86 volvo for a month on bare metal. So, lol. Check it as often as you check your suspension, and battery charge, belts etc. Usually when one is worng, several more comes up. Bad belt? Don't know it, sooner or later your battries not getting FULLY charged for a month or two, and you break down because of broken belt and bad battery. Same with brakes. Pad is ALL the sudden worn, sooner or later your rotor will warp, get that turned. Trust me you'll know.

To answer your question, if normal economy, usually every year need to check it.When do you know you need to change your brake pads?On disk brakes, there are rivets that will make a loud squeeling noise when you apply the brakes if the pads need to be replaced. All 4 wouldn't have to be replaced, but it would be a good idea, and the two on the front would have to be replaced at once. When do you know you need to change your brake pads? Most brake systems have wear indicators on the pads. When they wear down they start making a squeaky noise. There are some gas stations and brake repair shops that offer free brake inspections like Midas.

Finally, if you do change them, change them all at once and have the rotors checked for runout or warping. When do you know you need to change your brake pads?pads are a lot cheaper than rotors, what u been told is pretty safe, front brakes do a lot more work than back but have them all checked at one time because its cheaper to know earlier than too late also more expensiveWhen do you know you need to change your brake pads? When they ware down to only a few millimetres in material if you let them ware down to the metal you will damage the rotors and this is expensive to change. When do you know you need to change your brake pads?physically inspect them, milage is a guide, not a hard and fast rule. check them every 6-8 months visually. you need not remove any wheels, if you can see from under the car side. just turn your wheels to check the front. you may have to remove the back tires if you have drums.

change front pads whenever they get under 1/8 %26quot; of pad left. that'll be about 40-50k. the rear should also be changed when they have under 1/8%26quot;.

if you have front and rear pads, use the pads as above. but if you have drum brakes on the rear, they wear much slower and the shoes should be changed no later than 60k.

timewise, pads last about 12-18 months, shoes about twice that. so basically, you'll change pads twice and shoes once in about 24-36 months, depending on your braking habits. if you have an automatic, you'll change pads early. if you have a stick shift, you use the engine to slow more than the brakes and the brakes can last longer, but just remember not to ride the clutch or push the clutch in when braking. don't push in the clutch until you are nearly stopped. it saves the clutch and pressure plate, and reduces wearing them out.

also, when coming to a stop, use light braking, over a longer distance. short braking causes uneven wear on both shoes and pads, resulting in jerking as you come to a stop. to get rid of the jerking you have to have the drums and rotors turned to even them out again. When do you know you need to change your brake pads?alot of your pads today has a squeeler on them.when you hear it scraping the rotor then its time to replace them. When do you know you need to change your brake pads?De Bossy answered your immediate question. I just thought I'd mention the mechanic part of your description.

Almost every mechanic I have ever gone to for whatever reason (im usually a DIY and always DIY with brakes) has checked my brakes and said the brakes need to be replaced. I have a funny feeling I know why!

Once, I went to my mechanic I USED to trust to get my radiator flushed. He said I needed to get the brakes replaced in the front where I had disc in the front and drum in the rear.

    I laughed and asked if the place was %26quot;under new management.%26quot; He said, %26quot;yeah, can you tell?%26quot;

I went on to show him the brand new box I put my old brakes into. The receipt was still there so I could return the old ones to the auto parts place. It proved I had done it that previous weekend.

Here's the point. If you can, just check your own brakes. If they are even somewhat worn, like say only a fourth used, the shop will probably tell you to replace.

How do i change my brake pads on my 2000 ford ranger?

I need new brakes and i heard it isn't that hard to change out brake pads. Plz add details i'm not a retard i just dont want to **** my **** up.How do i change my brake pads on my 2000 ford ranger? You will need a jack, Jack stands, and Wheel blocks (In the event that the brake fails or your truck slips out of gear) the pads for the truck, Brake cleaner, a C-clamp (About a 6 in), wire or metal hangers, and Basic hand tools.

Break the lug nuts lose but do not remove them from the tires. Raise and support the truck with the jack and jack stands. Make sure the truck is resting on the jack stands and it does not rock back and forth. Remove the lung nuts from the wheels and remove the tires.

Once the tires are removed inspect the brake hoses and the calipers for cracks, wear, or other damage. The Calipers are held in place by 2 bolts. They may us a socket or a torx bit. (Normally a T-15 or t-20.) It varies on fords. I have seen both on their trucks. Loosen and remove the support bolts. With a small flat blade screw driver gently pry the caliper off the rotor (Make sure you do not scar, gouge, or damage the caliper or rotor in this process. The caliper should pull out of the support fairly easy. Next remove the outer pad from the caliper. With the old pad still in place use the C clamp to compress the piston on the caliper. You need to compress the piston in to the caliper other wise the new pads will not fit back around the rotor on the truck. For best results and to keep from damaging the control valve on the ABS Crack the bleeder valve on the caliper. Remove the inner pad after the piston is fully compressed.

Once the caliper has been compressed close the bleeder valve and use the wire or the hanger to help support the caliper, do not let the caliper hang from the brake hose. With the caliper supported and out of the way inspect your calipers for groves, glazing, burn marks, or uneven ware. Also take this time to inspect the pads that have been removed for uneven wear as well.

For the best possible brake job and to give you the best stopping power, pull the rotors and take then down to the auto parts store and have then turned. This takes care of a number of things that can cause poor performance from brakes. It removes the glaze from the surface, it true檚 the rotor (All rotors warp no matter how you drive) and it also gives a good clean surface for the brakes to mate too.

Once you get the rotors back from the auto parts store (Normally takes about an hour or two to complete the turning.) it's time to reassemble the system. a few things you need to do prior to reassembly is clean up the contact surfaces of the caliper and the mounting bracket also to use the brake cleaner to remove any grease, dirt, or metal filings that may have been left over from the machining process. Use some paper towels to wipe away the excess brake cleaner, install the rotors on to the car.

Next you need to install the calipers, these are free floating calipers and need to have a good clean lubricated surface to operate correctly. Using some sand paper or a wire brush remove any rust on any of the mating surfaces for the caliper and the mounting bracket. It doesn't need to be perfect but the cleaner you can get it the better. once the surface it cleaned up use a little bit or grease and apply it to both the mating surface of the caliper and the mounting bracket (We will some times use some small strips of Teflon to help them glide a little better but you do not need to do this. Install the new pads remove the caliper from the hanger and reinstall the caliper on to the car. You will need to lube the bolts as they help the caliper move freely as well. Install the bolts and tighten to hold the caliper in place.

Once the pads and the calipers have been installed and everything is sitting how it should, you will want to pump the breaks to help seat the pads against the rotors. (Starting the car will help as it uses the power break booster to help seat the brakes.) Check the pedal for feel. If they are a little spongy, this is likely because you opened the bleeder valve, you need to have some one pump the brakes while you bleed the system out. The best way to complete this is to start at the wheel that is farthest from the driver檚 seat, which would be the passenger rear wheel. Have your assistant pump the brakes and hold them, you crack the bleeder valve and look for air bubbles. If you see none lock the bleeder valve and move to the next wheel. Follow this process until you have done all the wheels working from the farthest wheel to the closest wheel to the driver.

Once you have completed the bleeding process put the wheels back on. Install the lug nuts and tighten then while still on the jack stands. Lower the car and then recheck the wheel lugs. Top off the brake fluid and then take the truck out for a test drive. Start out slow and do not get in to the brakes. They need time to seat and break in the new surface. You truck should stop just as well as it did when you purchased the car.

Hope this helps and please contact me if you have any more questions. How do i change my brake pads on my 2000 ford ranger?just go to servicing center and ask them to change the breaksHow do i change my brake pads on my 2000 ford ranger? On a 2000 Ranger, assuming you have the front of the truck jacked up with the wheels removed, you need a 13mm socket or wrench to remove the two brake caliper bolts. Once the caliper is removed, hang the caliper with a piece of coat hanger, or something else suitable. You will need a 1/2%26quot; drive 15mm socket and johnson bar to remove both of the caliper bracket bolts. Once removed, install the new anti-rattle clips and new brake pads onto the caliper bracket making sure the appropriate brake pads with the wear indicator tab on the INBOARD side of the bracket. Depending on whether your truck is 4x4, or 4x2, the brake rotors just %26quot;knock off%26quot; if it's 4x4. If it's 4x2, you will need to remove the center dust cap, and the cotter pin, as well as the floating bearing retaining nut in order to remove the rotor. The procedure is extensive for 4x2, so if you want further information, you can e-mail me, and I'll be happy to help you out. Hope this helps.

How do I change my brake pads?

They are ABS brakes and I have no clue on how to change it, but I want to change them myself to save a little money, money is tight right now, So how do you change the pads for a 96 Ford Taurus GL V6. Do I need to flush out the Fluid, If I do, How do I do that also? Thank you for your helpHow do I change my brake pads? With the front of the vehicle lifted off the ground, and properly supported by jackstands, remove the front wheels. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left. Using a 12mm wrench, remove the two brake caliper bolts, and remove the brake caliper. Using a broken piece of coat hanger, hang the caliper on one of the coils of the spring. DO NOT let it hang by the flex hose. Using a 15mm 1/2%26quot; drive flex impact socket and impact gun, OR a 15mm 1/2%26quot; drive socket with a long johnson bar, remove the two caliper bracket support bolts, and remove the bracket along with the brake pads. The brake rotor should now just %26quot;knock off%26quot; the hub. Either replace, or take the rotor to a shop to be resurfaced. Bear in mind, the minimum thickness spec. for this particular brake rotor is 24.75mm. If the thickness is below that, you will need to replace the brake rotors. Using one of the old brake pads and a pair of channel lock type pliers, compress brake caliper piston all the way back into its bore. Clean off the hub surface of any rust, and apply a light coat of anti-seize compound. Re-install either a new rotor, or the resurfaced rotor (if still within specs.) and secure temporarily with two wheel nuts onto the hub. Clean off all brake dust on the caliper bracket, particularly the area where the brake pad sits, and lubricate with anti-seize. Re-install caliper bracket making sure the two 15mm bolts are TIGHT. Install new brake pads. Re-install brake caliper, paying attention to ensure the pads stay properly seated during re-installation. Turn steering wheel all the way to the right, and repeat the procedure as outlined. Once finished, re-install the wheels, and torque the wheel nuts to 95-100 ft.-lbs. in a %26quot;star%26quot; pattern. Release vehicle to the ground. PUMP UP THE BRAKE PEDAL UNTIL RESISTANCE IS FELT IN THE PEDAL, BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO MOVE VEHICLE!!!!! Hope this helps. How do I change my brake pads?Remove your wheels, take the calipers off the housing and do not loosen the brake hose, use a c-clamp to push the caliper piston back. Inspect the rotors, replace if they are grooved, rusted, or if you feel a pulsation - I recommend replacing rotors anyway. To replace the rotors, loosen the caliper housing bolts, and use a hammer if needed to pound the old rotor off, clean the hub surfaces, install the caliper housing, install the pads, and put the caliper back in place and tighten the bolts, then reinstall the wheel. Repeat this procedure on the other side. No bleeding is necessary. To do rear pads, you may need a special tool to retract caliper piston. How do I change my brake pads?willsoun Best wishes for you...

I changed my front rotors and brake pads about 10,000 miles ago. The rotors warped after the lug nuts for my wheels were fastened too tightly and now I have pulsation when I brake. I'm planning to turn my rotors but do I need to change brake pads also? The pads are new and I hate to waste them.Warped Rotor resurfaced. Do I need to change Brake Pads?Have you priced new rotors? They generally run about $25 a piece and make turning old ones not worth the trouble. The pads should be fine.Warped Rotor resurfaced. Do I need to change Brake Pads?Yes, it's best to replace the pads again too. This way you won't keep going around in circles replacing one part of the system at a time.Warped Rotor resurfaced. Do I need to change Brake Pads? You may experience a smoother ride if you do change them but I wouldnt at first, see how the ride is, if there is still a lot of vibration when you brake, then change them.Warped Rotor resurfaced. Do I need to change Brake Pads? When you take your tires off to remove your rotors just inspect your pads. For the price of the brake pads you may as well replace them if they have any wear at all. If your rotors were worn enough that you could feel it when you brake then the pads probably wore unevenly and will take some time to wear back to an even level. No sense only fixing half of the brakes, you should replace the pads IMO.

When should I change the Brake Pads for my 2007 Civic Si Sedan?

I bought my Civic Si sedan brand new. It currently still has the stock brake pads on them. It has been about 3 years and I have not changed the pads yet. They do not squeak or anything but they are getting a little thin. As a side note, i do not abuse my car. I drive it normal. But I don't want to change the Brake pads if i don't need to as of yet. When should I change the Brake Pads for my 2007 Civic Si Sedan?Simply check them every time you rotate your tires. I would change them when they get down to 1/16 of an inch or when the wear indicators start making noise. When should I change the Brake Pads for my 2007 Civic Si Sedan? There is a sensor that will squeal like hell when your wear down to it. The factory recommends you replace your pads when you are 2mm from that sensor. In all reality you can wait till you hit that sensor without problems, just replace them immediately after. When should I change the Brake Pads for my 2007 Civic Si Sedan?if its less than 1/4%26quot; you should replace them.

  • Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads?

i want to change the brake pads on my 95 ford escort. I was wondering do i have to bleed the brakes after i change the Pads?Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads? Not unless you open the system. Just don't remove any brake lines... you'll be fine.

Just remember, you have to push the caliper pistons back to make room for the thicker pads (new), when you do this, you're actually pushing brake fluid back into the master cylinder. When you first start the car, you'll need to pump the brakes a few times to fill the lines back up before they feel right. Good Luck!Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads?no, not unless you open up a bleeder screw or loosen a brake lineDo you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads?Nope, as long as you don't open a brake line or bleeder screw. You will not need to when replacing the pads on your car.Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads? No, not unless you have open the bleeder valves or have a brake fluid leak. But if your brake fluid hasn't been flushed in many years, you'd do well to have it flushed by a shop if your going to keep the car several years.

http://www.troublecodes.net/articles/frnDo you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads? Not necessarily. Bleeding usually needs doing if system is opened. When pushing calipers back you will dump fluid from the master cylinder. Normally.

    Since this is a safety issue, I recommend you let an expert do it.........Don't kill someone because of costs.Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads?It is not required, however it a good idea to flush the brake lines, meaning;

    1. Crack the bleeders (one at a time)

    2. Monitor the master cylinder level.

    3. Once the master cylinder is almost empty, refill with new brake fluid.

    4. Allow each bleeder to drip until clean brake fluid appears.

禄禄禄Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads? No. Take off the cap on the master cyl...push back the old break pads as far as they will go..this will push break fluid up the break lines and out of the master cyl. Install new pads. Slowly pump the break pedal a few times. Add break fluid..replace cap and your done. Recheck fluid and add if needed.Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads?It is suggested but not necessary. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, meaning it will absorb moisture from the air, and reduse its %26quot;boiling%26quot; point. Brake fluid is often %26quot;forgot about%26quot; until there is a leak, but should be completely changed every couple of years.Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads? No, but you would want to take some fluid out of the resevoir if the pads are low before pushing the piston back into its bore and per ASE they say to open the bleeder valve as you push the piston back into the bore, then check the fluid level.Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads? No, only if the closed system is breached.Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads?never! and people that add fluid to there reservoir when they notice its low should pay double for a brake job for being so ignorant!Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads? You don't have to bleed them, but now is the best time to change your brake fluid. Brake fluid spoils after 2-3 years and will start to eat up the seals in your master or your calipers and wheel cylinders. Have it done professionally or get a service manual for proper procedure. Preventative maintenance is the best way to keep your car trouble free!Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads?no, the only time you have to bleed the brakes, is if you have to change master cylinders, change wheel cylinders, replace a line or hose. by putting on brake pads or shoes, your not breaking on anything. all you have to do after you put the pads on, is pump the brakes so they will seat against the rotors. i hope this does you some good.Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads?usually you don't as long as you don't open the bleeders to get the piston pushed back in, use a c-clamp to push the piston on the caliper back in and you won't have to open the bleeder.Do you have to bleed brakes after you change the brake pads?99 times out of 100...

As long as no bolts break you shouldn't have a problem. I have never taken a car in for a brake change, and I am far from being a mechanic. I would recommend doing one side at a time. This way if you do forget how to put it back together then just look at another brake. Very easy to do, make sure you pump your pedal back up before driving. Is it possible and recommended for me to change brake pads in my car?Yes its possible but the first time I would recommend you have someone with you who has done it before. 8-9 on your own, first time with someone who knows what they are doing 3-4, if they do it for you 1.Is it possible and recommended for me to change brake pads in my car?If you have the right tools, a 5. You may hear some people throw %26quot;scare tactics%26quot; at you such as your life depends in doing the job correctly, think for a moment who taught them! Any car specific service manual explains the entire procedure.

Go to your public library and sign out Chilton's or Motors Manuals. Look for your specific car as they have the best reading and picture information. You may need a few tools, metric sockets and a large C clamp to compress the caliper pistons. Borrow or buy one or the other of the following: A vernier caliper or a 0%26quot; - 1%26quot; micrometer.

Call any any automotive brake rotor sales counter to find minimum thickness of your rotors. If your rotor thickness is within .025 of minimum toss them in the scrap can. If you plan on keeping your car for 2 yrs or more do not buy %26quot;off shore%26quot; cheap Chinese brake rotors. The quality of the metallurgy and annealing cycle is well below rotors made in the US. or Canada. If you have a light weight car consider organic pads such as EBC Green Stuff. Your rotors will never wear out and brake dust is pretty much nonexistent. Ceramic pads last longer but tend to wear rotors more agressively than organics. Forget semi-metallic or full metallic pads as they eat brake rotors to death. At 40,000 miles with metallics rotor wear is cooked. Look at an example: Toyota automobiles from the factory have organic pads. It's not unusual to see 60 - 80,000 mile life with these pads.

Always apply CRC Brake Quiet ( liquid high temp. silicone) on the back steel side of your pads. This step prevents brake squeal. It's avalible at any NAPA store. * Very important* -pick up 4 packets of high temp calper slider pin grease. The manual shows where and how to use it. Good luck with your project! Is it possible and recommended for me to change brake pads in my car?If you have confidence in yourself go ahead and try it, I'm sure you can find someone to bail you out if you run into trouble, I would say it's a 3 on the scale, by rights you should take the rotors off and have them turned by an autoparts store to do the job right, once you do the job you will see how easy it is.Is it possible and recommended for me to change brake pads in my car?depends on your mechanical skills and car frt or rr brakes i would say 3 to 6Is it possible and recommended for me to change brake pads in my car?its not really that hard to do id say a 4Is it possible and recommended for me to change brake pads in my car?it depends on the year, make and ,model. do you all the right tools? you should be prepared to replace or resurface rotors. you'll be working with the caliper as well. if your mechanically inclined go for it. if not find a good mechanic. Is it possible and recommended for me to change brake pads in my car?it depends on what kind of car your talking about.some are harder then others, but ill say,by not knowing what car your talking about, about a 8.Is it possible and recommended for me to change brake pads in my car?it is possible, why pay a garage loads of money to do it. it tells you how to do it in a haynes manual for your type of car. if you dont mind getting dirty, do it yourself.

How to change brake pads on a 2003 mazda 6?

I just recently bought a 2003 Mazda 6 with 25,000 mile on it. I notice that there is a slight sqeeke when I break and would like to change the pads now before they wear the rotor. I first thought about going to the shop but the idea of spending $150.00 per axal is appalling (especial when you consider that a set of pads for the front and another for the back only cost a total of $40.00). I also own a 1997 Mazda 626 and have done the front brakes on it a number of times. What I needed to know is is there any difference between changing the brakes on the old one versus the new one. Are there any special tools I need? Are there any free online resources for repair and maintanance? I tried to find a Chiltons or a Haynes at my local auto store but they don't have one for a Mazda 6. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I plan on doing the brakes today so that I may take a road trip this weekend. ThanksHow to change brake pads on a 2003 mazda 6?http://www.mazda6tech.com/index.php?opti

That site, and mazda6club.com have all the information you will ever need for your car.How to change brake pads on a 2003 mazda 6?No, brake pads technology hasn't changed. You could probably follow the same procedures you did on you 1997.

The only special tools are what it takes to remove the calipers. Some use Torques, other allen, I prefer just the regular bolts but you'll have to take the wheel off to see what was used.

Yeah, the Mazda 6 is too new to see anything on line too. (sorry)

Autozone has put out a great set of manuals for all older vehicles that you can get online now.

    (ie for your 97 Mazda)

However like I said most brake systems haven't changed much and replacement has been done in the same fashion. How to change brake pads on a 2003 mazda 6?It is the same process for changing the pads on any car. What you are primarily paying for with brake jobs is labor. Yes, the parts are $40, but that means you are being billed $110 for labor, and since the standard labor rates for mechanics are around $60 an hour, that's about two hours work, which is about right.

  • Do I need to change brake pad hardware when I replace the pads?

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima with 63000 miles on it. I need to do my first brake job on this car, and plan on changing the front brake pads and resurfacing the front brake rotors. I was wondering if I should put new brake pad hardware in while I檓 at it.Do I need to change brake pad hardware when I replace the pads?well when you get new brake pads you should get in the same package a couple metal clips, this is the only %26quot;hardware%26quot; i know of that exists on disk brake systemsDo I need to change brake pad hardware when I replace the pads?It may not be a big difference in price to just buy new rotors, but as far as your brake question, all you need to do is get brake cleaner and spray it on rotors and wipe them down with a clean cloth and just put your pads on. This will take care of any squeaks. There is no need to replace anything other than pads and rotors.Do I need to change brake pad hardware when I replace the pads? The rotors will not need to be replaced unless they are grooved.

By hardware do you nuts, bolts and springs, probably not needed or they would be in the pad kit.Do I need to change brake pad hardware when I replace the pads?It is recommended in order to reduce brake noise/squeal/squeak.

Not doing it will not hurt the brakes.

How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?

    of the rear brakes

also, in order to resurface the brake routers, is changing the brake pads necessary?

car is VWHow much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?First, check and see if this VW has four-wheel disc brakes. If it's like most vehicles, the rear brakes are drum, and there are no rotors (not 'router'), or brake pads, instead there are brake shoes.

I just had new rotors put on the front of my 1996 Ford Explorer. I have my work done at Midas, been going there for years and the shop manager takes good care of us and our vehicles. A new rotor is $90 and the cost of installing it plus the new pads (new pads are always free after the first Midas brake job) and adjusting the calipers was $55. Resurfacing a rotor might cost half as much as replacing it, but sometimes they are too corroded to have much material left after resurfacing and it's wasted money.

As it was explained to me, pad wear mirrors rotor wear. If you resurface or replace a rotor, new pads are generally a good idea.

Drum work is a little different, and cheaper, than disc. Check and see if you have rear drum brakes, and if you do, I bet you can get new shoes put on for less than $100.

If you've got disc all the way around and it's a VW (import parts are usually more than US), I wouldn't be surprised to see a complete job with new rotors and pads plus installation set you back $800.How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?changing the pads is extemly important. you will ruin the rotors if you dont replace them plus they are very cheap. also in my past experiences it is just as cheap to replace the rotors then turn them plus you dont have to worry about warpage and a warranty comes with the new one the turned ones get no warranty.at auto zone the prices range up and down but for a 1996 vw jetta with a 6 cyl the rotors that are the cheapes with a 2 year warranty are 18.99 and the pads are the cheapest ones with a limmited lifetime warranty and they are 24.99 so it is very cheap these are general prices for front pads and rotors. if you supplied info on your car like make modle and year i coulda gave more accurate prices.i did all four brakes on my jeep myself for around 150.00 and this is with all new parts and it is very easy if you need help grab a haynes repair manual at auto zone, there like 12.00 and explain it in great detail. How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?Yes you need new pads. If you don't replace these, then you just threw a bunch of money away.

Ball park, a good price would be about 80 US dollars an axle to get the brakes done. Provided the mechanic does not find something else wrong. This would be a %26quot;Promotional Price%26quot;, you know, a Midas special.

A reputable shop will be more, because they don't have to give promotional prices to get customers to bring cars in for service. Some shops are so good they don't try to sell you a part like a caliper that you do not need. Hope you can find one of these. The job estimate is always right or less.

While %26quot;Promotional Priced%26quot; repairs very seldom get out the door for less and most likely they will cost a lot more before it is over. How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?do no resurface you brake router. leave your brake router alone. and since it is a vw im going to recommend trading it in for something that isnt a complete pile of sh*t

Is it worth it to change the brake pads myself?

I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado and just started to hear the grind sound. I have never changed brake pads before and am a very inexperienced mechanic. I did some quick reading online and am considering tackling the job myself. What is the cost of having a pro change the pads compared to doing it myself? Is it worth it?Is it worth it to change the brake pads myself? If you get a manual like Haynes so you have some help with this it can be a very easy job. The standard job requires removing the tire, removing one of the bolts holding the caliper, compress the piston with a C-clamp using the old brake pad, then install the new pads and put it back together. It's a simple job that sounds a little harder than it is, just figure what you will have to pay a shop and what it will cost you then decide if it's worth your time. Everyone's time has a different value.

ADD: If you have to pull the rotor you just remove the other bolt holding the caliper and hang the caliper by a wire or piece of rope so there is no tension on the brakeline. The rotor will just slide off.Is it worth it to change the brake pads myself? At least $200 for someone else to do it. You can do it for about $60. If you need to turn the rotors which you do if they were grinding, you can take them down to napa and have them done for $12 a piece or they will charge you an extra $100 at a shop per wheel. They usually get you out for about $3-400 for what you can do for $60-100 yourself. I highly recomend doing it yourself. Pick up a hayne's manual for some pointers. Is it worth it to change the brake pads myself?well for one if ur in the rivets then you will need the rotors turned if they can be or buy new ones.two buy a book with instructions to help you along the first time and three only take one side off at a time so you can see how to put it back together in case you for get how it goes back together.also make sure to have the rite tools when you start and a big c-clamp to compress the caliper with and do it slowly. Is it worth it to change the brake pads myself? You save a lot of money doing them yourself and you get to choose the brake pads that you want. It doesn't take too long and is not too hard either. Like the answer above, 200$ for the shop to do it, and 60$ to do it yourself (for all 4 brake pads). Is it worth it to change the brake pads myself?in my opinion yes

my father never had the concept of maintanance so i have by my self with no help droped in a new engine replaced a broken axle changed my own oil rimed my own tires and countless modifications.

in short if you know how to go it yourself then do so it saves a lot of money in labor costs

How to change brake pads on my car?

I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am (6 cylinder). I want to change the brake pads. I bought the pads already. I just need to know what else I will need and maybe some pointers so I don't mess up. Thank you muchHow to change brake pads on my car?Go to the autozone.com website, register, enter your vehicle info in the profile, and click %26quot;repair info%26quot; then %26quot;view repair guide%26quot;. Click %26quot;brakes%26quot; then %26quot;front(?) disc brakes%26quot;. There you will find links to sections on calipers, pads, and rotors.

This will cover the basics, but is far from everything you really should know to do a brake job. For example, it doesn't mention that you should lubricate the sliding mechanism.

    http://repairguide.autozone.com/znetrgs/

It doesn't mention shims or anti-rattle clips. It doesn't tell you what tools you will need. It doesn't tell you that the rotor should be either re-surfaced or replaced, or that the rotor will probably be too thin after going through one set of pads to be legally resurfaced because they are very thin to start with.

Worst of all, it doesn't tell you that you should replace the cover for the master cylinder before pumping the brakes, so that brake fluid (which eats paint) doesn't end up all over your drivers side fender. Well, OK, maybe that's not the worst that could happen, but it does kinda bite.

btw, if the setup they're using on Grand Ams is similar to what they're using on Grand Prix's of the same vintage, you won't need a TORX (star socket LOL) bit. It's a totally different design. TEVES calipers, not Delco-Moraine.

And you won't need to bleed the brakes. How a guy who thinks that gets a 32% rating is beyond me.How to change brake pads on my car?Don't allow any fluid out of, or air into, the brake lines, and do not attempt to change the fluid. If you mess it up, you'll lose control of the brakes and crash into something hard and heavy and you'll die, and your family won't even have anyone around to sue.

Does that go some way to explaining how extremely careful you should be with your brake lines?

That said, you can change the pads yourself, of course you can. Just don't 'bleed the brakes' like others have suggested, unless you're a fully licensed and fully qualified mechanic. And even then, better to have someone else to hold to account if something goes wrong. How to change brake pads on my car?Well if you insist on doing it yourself this is how. After you take the tire off there should be two bolts holding on the caliper which is what holds the brake pads. Take the two bolts off and then pull the caliper off the rotor which is the big metallic disc. It will be hard to pull off but it will come off. Then take the pads out and use a big c clamp to compress the piston on the caliper make sure to remove the reservoir cap on the brake fluid under the hood then put the new pads in. Then put the caliper back on the rotor and bolt it down. Now you have to bleed the brake to get all of the air out of the line. There should be a small nipple looking bolt on the back of the caliper. You will need some one else to help. Someone needs to get in the car and pump the brakes and hold them to the floor while there doing that someone else needs to loosen that nipple and let the fluid come out and then tighten it back up before the person lets there foot off the brake. Do that three or four times and make sure there is plenty of brake fluid in the reservoir. How to change brake pads on my car?well let,s see ! you will need a c-clamp to push the caliper piston back in and either a allen wrench or a star socket, probably it takes a star. ok jack up the car, put jack stands under it for safety, take off the wheel, run a couple of nuts on the rotor to keep it straight, take a 3/8 drive ratchet and the star socket or allen head and take the caliper bolts out but leave the caliper on the rotor for right now. now take your c-clamp and run the piston back in all the way, take the c-clamp off and remove the caliper. change the pads, clean off the slides where the caliper bolts to and smear a small amount of high temperature grease on the slides, put the caliper back on, tighten the bolts, take the 2 nuts off the rotor, put the tire back on and tighten the lug nuts. now do the same on the other side. you won,t need to bleed the brakes because you don,t have to loosen any hoses or lines. putting pads on won,t put air in the lines. How to change brake pads on my car?there is a lot of videos about replacing brakepads on youtube. it wasn't really hard if you pay attention from those videos. First you should have all the tools you might need. Floorjack, jackstand, c-clamp probably to push the piston in. 17%26quot; socket to remove two bolts (they are kinda tight) that holds caliper and brake cleaner. GoodluckHow to change brake pads on my car? You'll need a Torx bit and ratchet to loosen the caliper. You will need a large C-clamp (6-8 inch) to compress the piston in the brake caliper. How to change brake pads on my car?If it's your first time, you'll need to have someone who's done

this properly to help guide you. There's too much riding on your brakes to just dive in...

Good Luck on your front brake job..

  • How do you change brake pads on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

I'm looking to save money on getting my brake pads changed by doing them myself. I have a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition. Any help would be greatly appreciated! How do you change brake pads on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee?I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited and have not had any problem with changing the pads. Now to clear up some of the concerns that were mentioned....

The first thing you should do is buy a Haynes repair manual for your Jeep...I think they are like $15. Take it home and read the section on the brakes and it will explain what to look for, how to check and how to replace them. If you are comfortable doing all these things then I would say you won't have a problem. The Grand Cherokee has 4 wheel disc brakes and these are about the easiest things on the jeep to change.

This is in the manual but when you are changing the brake pads take the rotors into a auto shop and have them turn the rotors..the Grand Cherokee is notorious for warped rotors.

I will also give a word of caution...I would not recommend changing the parking brake shoes, these are not disc brakes and require special tools and are actually a PITA to get to. But that is just my opinion. Again it is in the repair manual and you can decide for yourself.

The first check I make with a new car is at 30,000 miles, but later on when the pads are getting thin your forced to check them more often so that they don't wear down to metal and damage the rotors. You can learn to check the pad thickness yourself if your willing to remove one front wheel and check both the inside and outside pads on the tops and bottoms of the pads. 3/16 inch thick at any point is replacement time in my book. You really don't lose much by changing them 10,000 miles early because the calipers are better off when they don't extended out as far as with new pads. How often should I change brake Pads? From what I understand, you only need to change the pads when the brakes get squeeky when you stop (in dry conditions... brakes do funny things when they get wet).
