They work by breaking a wire in a little plastic sensor that is integral with the brake pads. Two opetions, if that is the case. Get the right brake pads, or take the wires and butt connect them to get the light to go out.

Very easy. Buy a caliper compressor, like $10 at pep boys.
Take off wheels, unbolt calipers, slide up. Do not remove brake lines. Slide out old pads. Use caliper compressor to compressor the piston in the caliper. Slide in new pads. Bolt caliper back onto rotor. Make sure you pump brakes a couple times to restore pressure.

I use 2 large flatblade screwdrivers and apply pressure to force the old pads away from the rotor before I remove them. I go nice and slow, and usually get the caliper piston fully recessed by the application of leverage on the old pad forcing them away from the rotor.

See about 6 months ago I got my brake-pads changed and put new ones in by a friend who is a mechanic at a dealership.
When i take my car to firestone today to do an oil-change, the mechanic tells me the guy who did my brake pads is an idiot. And that you're supposed to %26quot;cut%26quot; the disc-brakes everytime you change the pads, that anyone can simply change the pad by reading the manual.
Is this true, or does he want me to pay him for something that is unecessary, I did notice the front-right disc was scratched, while the other ones looked neat.Is it true that when you change your brake-pads you have to?I think it's great that the guy at the oil change place looked your car over for other possible problems. This creates a ridge of uneven wear on the outside and inside of the disc, and can cause improper braking performance if new pads are installed without the brake being lathed. The disc will be placed in a brake lathe and the uneven parts cut off to make the disc even again.
If your discs were very worn and uneven they should have been machined. Have the mechanic from the dealership show you what is wrong with the brake discs- you should be able to see the uneven surface of the disc if is it present.

The front brake squeaks a little when I hit the front and I dont know if thats supposed to happen or if the pads need changed. I dont know how to tell if the pads are worn or not and I dont know how to get the caliper off either. When the pads wear down, this tab will contact the rotor and make a sound much like fingernails across a chalkboard. if you hear this noise, then that should also tell you new brake pads are in order. And one more thing, when you do the pads, inspect the condition of the rotors. The surface that the pad contacts on the rotor should be smooth and shiny. If you see gouges, grooves, or roughness in the rotor, the rotor might have to be replaced also. You do not want to cut corners when servicing brakes. Bad brakes on a car makes it dangerous and even life threatening so make sure your brakes are as good as you can get em.

Remove rotor. I would get %26quot;loaded%26quot; calipers with a good warranty (make sure they come with premium pads), purchase premium rotors, not the economy cheap ones, clean the new rotors with cleaner, to remove oils and dirt, install rotors, then caliper mounting bracket to knuckle, then mount the pads and caliper . If you have screw on hose ends, screw the hoses on and use a wrench to snug the hose before mounting caliper, don'tlet caliper dangle from hose, then finish tightening once caliper is mounted..(make sure it is snug prior to caliper installation or you may twist the hose). If it is a banjo fitting, make sure the washers are on either side of the fitting when bolt is inserted, and you can put it on before or after caliper is mounted, whatever is easier. Then, bleed the hydrolics and calipers. Don't let the master cylinder to suck in air. top off reservoir and eye it while bleeding.

Siphon 2/3 of the brake fluid out of the master cylinder reservoir.
Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
Compress the caliper piston back into the caliper bore using a large pair of pliers, C-clamp or special caliper piston retracting tool.
Remove the caliper mounting bolts and sleeves.
Remove the caliper from the steering knuckle without disconnecting the brake hose. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose. Support the caliper with a piece of wire.
Remove the outboard pad by pushing in on the outside edge of the pad to release the mounting dowel from the hole in the caliper. When both dowels are unseated, push the pad out the bottom of the caliper.
Remove the inboard pad from the caliper by pulling it out of the caliper.
To install:
Inspect the caliper for any signs of leakage. If the caliper is leaking, new brake pads will be damaged. Also inspect the condition of the caliper support for rust and corrosion which will hinder the travel on the caliper.
Inspect the caliper mounting hardware. New bolts are usually recommended. Clean all parts well. Lubricate the mounting bushings and sleeves with silicone grease as required.
Install the inboard pad in the caliper so the spring clip on the pad back engages in the caliper piston.
Install the outboard pad over the caliper end until the mounting dowels snap into the mounting holes in the caliper.

First, you need to remove the tire. The brakes should be held onto the rotor by two bolts. Remove the two bolts(they are on found behind the brakes), and slide the whole unit off of the rotor. Pull the old pads off, and put the new ones in. If you have trouble sliding unit back on the rotor, open the brake fluid cap under the hood, and push the caliper back to give you room to slide the unit on the rotor. Tighten the bolts on the back of the pads, and you are good to go. It sounds difficult, but once you work on it, you'll see how easy it is.

remove rear wheels, pull (may need to slightly hammer off) brake drums (don't set your parking brake). The only thing that holds the drums on is the wheel. Then you will have access to the shoes. Remove horizontal spring on the bottom near the star wheel (auto-adjuster), then remove the horizontal spring at the top. Next you will see 2 round caps with a cross in the middle of the (one per shoe in the middle of the shoe frame). Push in on them and rotate to line up cross to get it off. May help to put your hand behind the brake assembly to hold the pin in place while you push in on the cap. Then they are off, to replace is just backward of removal.

The longest part IMHO is jacking the car up and putting it on stands. And yes, when I do my brakes, I always change the pads AND the rotors.
As far as a %26quot;certified mechanic,%26quot; it's usually done in about 2 hours depending on their mood. If it took them 35 minutes you'll be charged an hour's worth of labor. I noticed that even though these %26quot;certified mechanics%26quot; are trained to observe what the service manual says (torque specs) they don't follow it. I just changed the front brake pads on my 2001 mercury cougar and I also turn my routers. I pump my brakes and then I went to test drive the car. I have to press the brake pedal all the way down to brake. Its brakes really soft and slow.
Before changing them the car use to brake good but it was jumpy. Could it be that the lines have air? I didnt do anything to the lines and so I dont think it would be air.

A. u chewed up the disks because u took too long to change the old brake pads and it needs replacement disks.
b. u didnt bleed the brake fluid. bleed them by disconnecting the break line and pumping the brake very hard for a good 5 to 10 secs.

You can use a C-Clamp (mini vice basically) and compress the cylinder away and put the brake pads in, then take the c clamp off.
Make sure you pump your brakes before driving away to make sure a tight pedal.

You need to jack up the car and remove the wheel, make sure you use good jack stands to support the weight of the van. Next use a c-clamp from the outside pad to the back of the caliper and compress the caliper.Then remove the lower caliper bolt and swing the caliper upwards away from the rotor. replace the pads and reinsert the caliper and bolt. Some axle dis-assembly required. These cars, such as Jaguar, featured a really smooth ride because when a wheel hit a bump there was a LOT less weight reacting - about 15 or 20 lbs less weight to control with shock absorber.
Also some French Citroen, German Audi. My 1967 Lotus Elan Coupe had inboard rear discs also. Rode like a baby carriage and cornered like on rails.
I wonder when the Grand Prix car designers will adopt inboard brakes. Loosen wheel nuts, Jack up and axle stand. Wheel off.
Using a pry bar (sturdy screw driver) gently ease the pistons of the calliper back. Do not damage the disk doing this.
There are Allen bolts top and bottom of the calliper, slacken one, remove the other, swing out the calliper. Change pads, replace calliper and put in the bolt, tighten them both up. Wheel on, do other side.
Pump the pedal a few times before you move the vehicle.
I think the Allen heads are 7mm, it's not the usual size that is in a set. I had to get one special from Hal Fred's
