How often should I change my brake pads? last time was at 42k miles and car is now at 58k miles?

get them checked every time you rotate your tires every other oil changeHow often should I change my brake pads? last time was at 42k miles and car is now at 58k miles?16k, pads are designed to last much longer. Most pads now days are lifetime. During a tire rotation and balance, always ask if the condition of your brakes are good. How often should I change my brake pads? last time was at 42k miles and car is now at 58k miles? Those are reasonable answers, but to answer your question..typically speaking 40k for front and twice that for the rear. There are variables that throw that out the window but 40, 80 is a general answer to a general question. How often should I change my brake pads? last time was at 42k miles and car is now at 58k miles?Front disc pads wear faster than the rear. It all depends on your braking habits. If you're someone who always waits until he's within 50' of the stop line to hit the breaks and come to a quick stop, you're going through brake pads fast. If you take your foot off the accelerator and let the car lose speed long before you need to start using the brakes then you're saving brakes. It's easy enough to know how much time you have by viewing how much pad is left. Just remove the wheel. When there's only a 1/4%26quot; of pad left it's time to replace the pads. How often should I change my brake pads? last time was at 42k miles and car is now at 58k miles? Most newer cars have a built in warning system. There is a spring that is built into the system that begins to make a screeching or scratching sound (if you will) when the pads are getting too thin. Don't depend on this totally. As others answered, have them checked at oil changes. And as the last resort if you hear the above sound when you apply the brakes. Better head for the repair shop or if you are mechanically inclined. Do it yourself.

Happy traveling

MickeyHow often should I change my brake pads? last time was at 42k miles and car is now at 58k miles? Most cars have a device on each wheel that %26quot;squeals%26quot; as you drive the car if your brake pads are wearing thin. If you hear that squeal, be sure to get them checked by a professional ASAP. When your brakes grind when you apply them you are all out pad and are rubbing metal on metal which if you do not get new pads on veeeeery quickly you will be out big, big dollars.

The other advice was good///always have them checked when the oil is changed and when you have the tires rotated. How often should I change my brake pads? last time was at 42k miles and car is now at 58k miles?Best thing to do is inspect the brakes for wear.

If the brakes are still stopping you fine they should be fine. How often should I change my brake pads? last time was at 42k miles and car is now at 58k miles?Mileage travel is not a good indication as to when you should replace your brake pads. If you are a agressive driver and do a lot of stop and go driving, your brake pads are going to wear out faster than if you are a smooth driver who cruises 65mph all the time and barely use brakes.

Most brake pads that I know have a little metal tab on its side. As the brake pad material wears down, the point of this tab will get closer and closer to the brake rotor, once the brake material is at certain point, almost gone, the tab will touch the rotor everytime you brake.

And this will make a metal to metal grinding sound that you will not fail to notice. Then you will know it's time to replace your brake pads.

Once you hear this grinding sound, take your car to do a brake job immediately. Metal to metal grinding will eventually damage the rotor. So take it to a shop immediately.

Good Luck.
