Do I really need to take my car to a shop to have the brake pads changed?

My husband has received a quote by a repair shop to replace the brake pads, plus the calipers and possibly rotating the disks, if necessary...of $250. I've changed my own brake pads before at a significantly less cost. I'm wondering, is it worth paying that much? The brakes are in good condition, I have a chevy malibu 2005. Before you can put the caliper back over new pads, the piston needs to be pushed back in.

Buy a Haynes manual for your car, you might need to get a tool to push the piston in, but it will be cheaper than the garage.



Read the whole procedure before you begin, make sure you have everything you need on hand, and save $200.

The only time you really need to take it in is when the rotors need to be turned.Do I really need to take my car to a shop to have the brake pads changed?ok if you just need your pads and rotors changed thats easy enough to do on your own and can probably be done for $75.00 but the calipers need to be changed too? Why? Especially in a 05, that doesn't sound right to me. Anything you can do yourself will just save you money, so if you can do it, then go for it.

You might want to get a book on them but not recomended special tools are needed. sorry . But if you want to know remove rear calipers, rem. pads, use caliper tool to turn back piston into caliper. then install new pads and tighten calipers....sound easy its not I still remember my 1st set 20 yrs ago

The brake calipers need to be removed by slackening and removing the 2 allen key bolts that hold them on.(Usually inside a rubber tube to keep the brake dust off them)Gently rock the caliper from side to side to get the hydraulic piston back a bit,then pull off.Remove old brake pads and put piston back as far as it will go into brake caliper( You may need to temperarily rebolt it onto do this?)Fit new pads,fit caliper ,tighten bolts,pump up brake pedal till it goes hard,then repeat for the other side.

The front brake squeaks a little when I hit the front and I dont know if thats supposed to happen or if the pads need changed. If you look in the side of the caliper, you should see this groove. If it is not there, then the pads are worn and need to be replaced. Also, there is a metal tab attached to the end of the backing plate on the pad assembly. When the pads wear down, this tab will contact the rotor and make a sound much like fingernails across a chalkboard. if you hear this noise, then that should also tell you new brake pads are in order. And one more thing, when you do the pads, inspect the condition of the rotors. The surface that the pad contacts on the rotor should be smooth and shiny. If you see gouges, grooves, or roughness in the rotor, the rotor might have to be replaced also. You do not want to cut corners when servicing brakes. Bad brakes on a car makes it dangerous and even life threatening so make sure your brakes are as good as you can get em.

They are a wealth of information for the price you pay. But if you want a short description on disc brakes here you go. If disc looks shiny or has grooves you need to have it machined. You need the manual for disc removal. If disc is in good shape, remove pads. Then slowly compress the pistons with a clamp or other tool. Install new pads and check fluid level. That's the short of it. Buy the manual, well worth it.

I need to know that tooHow do you change the front brake pads, rotors and calipers on a 1990 Ford Thunderbird?jack up the front, remove the wheels, clamp the hydraulic hose to caliper so fluid doesn't leak, unbolt the brake hose banjo fitting or threaded hose and washers from the caliper, remove the caliper to mounting bracket bolts, remove caliper and drain remaining fluid into a proper container, remove mounting bracket to knuckle bolts, remove bracket. Remove rotor. I would get %26quot;loaded%26quot; calipers with a good warranty (make sure they come with premium pads), purchase premium rotors, not the economy cheap ones, clean the new rotors with cleaner, to remove oils and dirt, install rotors, then caliper mounting bracket to knuckle, then mount the pads and caliper . If you have screw on hose ends, screw the hoses on and use a wrench to snug the hose before mounting caliper, don'tlet caliper dangle from hose, then finish tightening once caliper is mounted..(make sure it is snug prior to caliper installation or you may twist the hose). If it is a banjo fitting, make sure the washers are on either side of the fitting when bolt is inserted, and you can put it on before or after caliper is mounted, whatever is easier. Then, bleed the hydrolics and calipers. Don't let the master cylinder to suck in air. top off reservoir and eye it while bleeding.
